Korean equestrian leader Hwang Young-sik dramatically won the right to compete in dressage at the Paris Olympics.
According to the Korea Sports Council and the Korea Equestrian Federation on the 28th, Hwang Young-sik has been
confirmed as a finalist for the Paris Olympics equestrian dressage event as a representative of our country.
Hwang Young-sik was originally competing with an Indian athlete for a spot in Group G, which included South East Asia
and Oceania, including Korea, but unfortunately lost by a narrow margin and was unable to participate in the Paris
Olympics.
Qualification for individual dressage events is based on the 'Olympic rankings' compiled from the athletes' competition
performances, and the number of qualifications is limited according to the regions set by the International Equestrian
Federation (FEI).
However, in Group F, which covers Africa and the Middle East, Palestine has no qualified players, leaving one ticket to
Paris.
Among the players who could not participate in the Olympics according to FEI regulations, Hwang Young-sik, who had the
highest score, was dramatically given the right to participate in the Olympics.
Hwang Young-sik stood out as a representative figure in Korean dressage, winning two consecutive gold medals at the
2010 Guangzhou and 2014 Incheon Asian 스포츠토토존 Games.
Hwang Young-sik, who moved to Germany and focused on accumulating Olympic ranking points, won the right to
participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held in 2021, but unfortunately was unable to compete in person.
This is because the situation has changed as the FEI introduced new regulations following the novel coronavirus infection
(Corona 19) pandemic.
The FEI recognizes the qualifications already secured, but requires that they be reconfirmed by participating in a
competition of a certain level or higher at least once and achieving results that meet the standard.
Hwang Young-sik, who had been staying in Europe, was unable to compete due to the spread of a local horse epidemic,
and thus the reconfirmation was canceled.
At that time, the player who received Hwang Young-sik's ticket was Kim Dong-sun, the third son of Hanwha Group
Chairman Kim Seung-yeon and head of the strategy headquarters at Hanwha Galleria.
Hwang Young-sik said in a phone call with Yonhap News, "I have learned a lot in Germany, and I am glad that I have the
opportunity to show off what I have learned at the Paris Olympics. I want to show (Europeans) that an athlete from Asia is
not afraid and has fun on the big stage. "he said.
Equestrianism is a sport dominated by European powers, so it is not easy to even qualify for the Olympics.
Korean equestrianism has participated in the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, 1988 Seoul Olympics, 2004 Athens Olympics, 2008
Beijing Olympics, and 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, including the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
Dressage, in which Hwang Young-sik will participate, is a competition in which a rider and horse compete to see how well
they can coordinate while following a set path around the stadium, and the referee evaluates the performance of the rider
and horse.
Park Seo-young, president of the Korea Equestrian Federation, said, “I am glad that the path has opened for Korean
equestrianism to once again advance to the world stage of the Olympics,” and added, “We will also provide all the
necessary support.”
